The Victoria Folk Music Society acknowledges with respect and gratitude the Coast Salish People upon whose traditional territories we live, work, and play. We honour and give special thanks to the Lekwungen and Saanich peoples, also called the Songhees, Esquimalt, Tsartlip, Pauquachin, Tsawout and Tseycum First Nations. |

Dec 08 Bits of String | ||||||||||||||||
Hailing from Roberts Creek on the Sunshine Coast, Bits of String is Kaia Nielsen, Mark Lebbell, and daughter Mari Nielsen playing a mix of stringy genres full of harmonies, humour, heartbreak, and hope! Recently Mark developed an unfortunate allergy to traditional Christmas mall music, so along with carrying an epi-pen this time of year, his condition necessitated he also develop a repertoire of “holiday-adjacent” tunes. If you’re looking for an evening of holiday spirit without the extra calories of figgy pudding, fried latkes, and chocolate magi, come and join Bits of String tonight for a tasty mix of covers and originals with a heaping side of Non-Traditional Holiday Vibes!
Dec 15 The Harmony Choir
A small group of passionate singers who also experience vision loss, The Harmony Choir shares their joy at public events, seniors’ homes and now the VFMS! Encouraging audience participation, their repertoire includes “oldie goldies”, Folk, Gospel, and whatever else is inspiring their members, so you never know what will pop up…including Pop! Director Marcelina Stanton arranges the songs in surprising ways, spreading the message that possibility and playfulness live in us all, along with our challenges. Begun in 2014 as The VIP Singers and restarted in 2022 as The Harmony Choir, their theme song is Terry Kelly’s The Power of the Dream, “changing what it means to be blind”!
Dec 22 Valdy | ||||||||||||||||
Valdy understands that people come to be entertained and tailors each of his shows (as many as two hundred a year!) to suit his audience. His distinctive voice and wry wit can be heard on Classic, Country, and campus radio stations across Canada and beyond, his songs reflecting the joys, struggles, and accomplishments in all of our lives while his guitar-playing seems effortless. Throughout the year, Valdy jams on bass guitar revealing the origin of his guitar-playing style that relies on the bottom end for the groove. A man of great talent and an even greater heart, the VFMS is thrilled to welcome Valdy back to our stage for the “umpteenth” time!
Dec 29 A Mid-Winter Ceilidh
With the dark of winter upon us, what better way to lift our spirits than a ceilidh? Bring your voices, your dancing shoes, some potluck fingerfood (savoury or sweet), and all your good cheer to the Folk’s annual year-end party! Doors open at 6:30 pm with the Folk providing hot beverages (tea, coffee, mulled cider) for all. Bring your seasonally themed songs and tunes for the usual jam & singing circle from 6:45–7:30 pm and then the show really gets rolling! Denis Donnelly will lead us in traditional winter carols, the Morris Dancers will be back with their traditional Mummer’s Play, and Shinndig (Ian Johnston, Dick Pollard, Patty Castle, & Karen Gillmore) will follow with lively dance music! John Erskine will be calling the dances and providing instruction so everyone can participate! Happy holidays!
